Doofus is a very nice wee platform game. The graphics are very nice, reminding me of games like the Blues Brothers.

It’s basically the nice graphics that makes the game. Other than that it’s a general platformer, you jump around collecting fruit and stars, and spend the rest of the time avoiding enemies and chasms. You get to shoot your enemies with a bouncy blue rubber ball. There are rabbits, flies, bugs and small elephants.. random.

According to Mobygames you are a “simpleton”, which is why it’s called Doofus. I’m not so sure about that, when I was in control he was quite okay!
What makes it slightly different however, is that you have your dog with you. So you have to be sure that he doesn’t get hurt. That requires timing your jumping properly and making sure you dispose of all the enemies. If your dog gets hit then you are told to “Look after your dog” and have to try again.

Be sure to press “down” and raise the red flags when you see them. They are the checkpoints and if you die or your dog gets hurt then you can start from the last raised flag.

I wasn’t the only one impressed with the fact that a game like this comes in a package smaller than 800kb.

Good game, it’ll keep you occupied for a while

Such a magnificent game. I remember this game from when I was much younger. I have to say I thought it was awesome then, and I think it’s awesome now.

At first glimpse it seems very simple, boring, crappy, mundane and well, crappy. But it’s not. Like a Transformer, there is “more than meets the eye”.

Great challenges face thee who takes on the role of King Abmis the Lion. Battle your way through puzzle riddled levels saving your potatoes. Yes, Sly Fox has stolen the Kings potatoes.

While on your quest you can collect weapons to throw (I think some of them are coconuts and .. water things). But you must avoid all the incredibly dangerous island inhabitants like crabs. You collect items which you can trade for other items, weapons and keys.

There’s also food to be had! This game is quite difficult. I did finish it when I was younger, but I have to admit I needed to ask someone in #oldgames for help just to get past the first level this time -_-

A bit about the specs? Good old PC speaker beeping away, plus stunning VGA graphics What more could you ask for? Well, unfortunately you could ask for more from a 1996 game, it’s a bit of a let-down. But the infuriating puzzles should distract you from that…

Climb aboard your turtle to Sly Fox’s island and save those potatoes!

Magic Maycabs is an absolutely wonderful game. Did I say wonderful? I meant difficult!

It sure takes me back to when I was about 15 and I played it for the first time. It reminded me a lot of Jumpman, Lode Runner and other little platforms out at that time. I loved Jumpman (it’s one of my favourite games of all time). So you can probably guess I adored Magic Maycabs, even though I found it excruciatingly hard at times.

According to the author Dan, Magic Maycabs is based on Magic Mushroom, which was an awesome game for the BBC Micro. (I remember that game!). Well, the reason you play a car in his PC version here, is because he couldn’t draw the best looking person I think that’s a good enough reason! Besides, it gives the game it’s own twist, and also lends to the name of the game – Maycabs. Named after a fictional taxi firm – it’s a long story I’m sure

Back to the plot, you are a car, a magical car that can jump. Maybe that is where the “Magic” comes into it. You have to drive around the level, collecting all the mushrooms. There are certain parts of the level which are fatal if your car goes into them. There are also enemies which you need to avoid, and they are clever enough to be attracted to your car too. A bit like possums and headlights? Or maybe dogs which chase cars…

Just when you thought that was bad enough – and trust me it is. There is also a time limit on each level. So you have to get all the mushrooms, avoid the enemies, and make it to the exit block before you run out of time on the clock. Much easier said than done… this game is damn hard. Or maybe we are all so into our modern games we’ve become useful at platform games.

Version 1.1 is shareware and available below (for memories sake). Version 2.0 is the registered full version, and it is also available as the main download below. This version has been made available by the creator Dan Lester for free! Version 2.0 also contains a level editor, which is easy to use and can keep you occupied for hours (just ask my family). You can use the level editor to create easier levels… hehe.

I want to say thanks to Swizzle for his part in getting this game out to everyone. And a really big thanks to Dan Lester for making this game free for everyone to enjoy.

Now THIS is an interesting game… interesting and strange, but totally brilliant!

The story? You and your band of heroes need to save Megalopolis from five dangerous criminals who have done a prison break. Battle through the streets (well, a strange city of platforms and ladders and keys) and get them baddies. There are 50 levels in the full version, so you get to face one every 10 levels.

Play as the Rocketress, Leadman, The Flea, The Drip, Spaced Cadet, The Flying Squirrel and Gumwad. You don’t need to worry about choosing, because once one gets into trouble you can use any of the others to help you out! Very handy. Being able to play as seven different characters. Your standard platform game with a twist. Yes, you still have to jump and climb and shoot etc, but your different characters have different specialties. The Rocketress has a rocket, The Drip turns into a pool of water, you get the idea. I wouldn’t want to ruin the strange surprises Their individual shots (they all just shoot little balls of “stuff”) do different things to the various enemies. The Drip took out the fire when I used him… I hope that was on purpose!

The characters also have different abilities. Gumwad can climb walls (I guess it’s because he’s so sticky), The Flying Squirrel didn’t mind going in the water, Does this remind you of a certain television show? I wonder if any of these characters can heal on their own, I didn’t discover if any of them could. None of them seem to be wearing any cheerleader costumes or are Asians called Hiro.

The highlight of this game is the objects you collect to gather points! Yes, you get gems you can use and keys etc, but that’s not as fun as gathering baseballs, diskettes, stamps and toilet paper. Oh, that gave me the giggles. I had to pause the game and show everyone in my family.

The game works wonderfully in DOSBox. The controls are simple, nice and standard DOS game stuff. ALT to shoot, CTRL to fire. I love that. Nice, predictable and easy-to-use.

Music is provided a mash-up of Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven and Bach. This creates quite an ambient if not rather strange atmosphere. But hey, they were thinking when they chose that, royalty free music Sounding very funky on the PC speaker! It actually goes quite well, is a nice change from the beeep-beeeeep-bip-bip-beep-whine soundtrack you normally get with PC speaking platformers.

Initally when this game was released in 1993 and didn’t do too well, a publisher picked the game up and it was released as shareware in 1994. The shareware version was called Heroes 1/4: The Tantalizing Trio (I’ve made that available to download as a resource, just for the hell of it). A big hats off to the creator of this game Jeffrey Fullerton for releasing the full version as freeware. He knows how to preserve his good work for all future generations.

Beware the vicious bunnies. Vicious! Yes, you will have to kill them. When bunnies go bad, eh? *sniff*

Here are some screenshots from the shareware version, Heroes 1/4: The Tantalizing Trio:

I was looking through my old games collection, wondering what game to review when this one popped up. I just had to add it to the site! This game is a total classic.

I laughed when I found out who designed it. There is a guy here at work called David Bayliss, but I’m sure he’s no relation. David Bayliss ran a one-man company called Wordworks, him being the one man in it. Wordworks has only released two freeware titles that I am aware of – Elevator and X-Fighter.

Anyhoo, seeing as I am reviewing the game, I should actually talk about the game! This game is great. By looking at the title of the name “Elevator” you can safely assume this game has an elevator in it. It sure does, in fact it’s all about elevators.

You are this cute little dude, who has to ride the elevators around the level and collect all the bags of gold. Once you have done that you can go onto the next level. Seems easy you say? It is no way near as easy as it seems. Timing is critical, those lifts get faster and it gets harder and harder. As with all old games the character isn’t nice and responsive like they are in modern games, you need to use pure skill. One slip and ‘ahhhhhhhhh’ down the elevator shaft you fall. You only get so many lives, so it pays to ration them.

The graphics aren’t all that bad, just what you would expect from an older game – yellow red and green gracing the screen. However, the colours do suit the simplicity of the game, and are not hard on the eyes. They are quite good.

This game is excellent. You really should give it a whirl, and see if you have the pure skill required. I really I do recommend it to all lovers of the old platform games, especially if you enjoyed Lode Runner and Jumpman!

Eye of Horus is an excellent platform game. I remember my mum buying it for me when it first come out – this was the only game we every bought when we were young, and I think it was a worthwhile purchase. I remember copying it for my friends! (Wow, I was a warez freak and never knew it :O.. hell, I wasn’t even 10 years old, how was I supposed to know!).

I have included an excerpt from the manual to better explain the story line of the game (it’s a pretty powerful and beautiful one you see):

The story, chiseled in stone, is about a once powerful king names Osiris. Osiris was a benevolent King, loved by all – except for one: his half-brother, Set. Set tricked Osiris into lying in a chest. Set then nailed the chest shut and sent it down the Nile, hoping to end his brother’s life.

But just as the captive Osiris was about to breathe his last breaths, his beautiful wife the legendary Isis found the chest with her dying king. In the joy of their reunion they conceived a son whose name was Horus. Osiris never lived to see his son – for he died in Isis’s arms. She ried to hide his body, for fear that Set would find it. But to no avail… Set did find it. And he tore the corpse into seven pieces, scattering them throughout the tomb. Now it is well known that a soul can not lie in peace unless his orpse is whole and properly placed in its arcophagus. Even his loved ones are unable to est until his body has been restored.

And so it is that neither Osiris, nor his family – Isis and Horus – is depicted on the final aintings inside the labyrinth. And not until orus reclaims the scattered bones, returns them to the sarcophagus and defeats the evil Set, will Osiris and his family reclaim their rightful place on the eternal sandstone of the burial chamber.

The unfinished legend is now up to Horus. And up to you.

So it’s your task to journey around the pyramid. One cool thing about this game is that as shaman, you have the ability to transform into a bird at by pressing the upward arrow key. This ability allows you collect items that are out of reach, and also avoid many of the dangers. That was one thing I noticed about this game, a great variety of dangers.

To get the real understanding of this game you have to play it. It’s a lot of fun, and a great challenge. Might take a while to understand the order of things and they way you have to do them, but I thoroughly enjoyed it

Oh wow, I was bumming around per usual and stumbled across this game. Floppy Frenzy is made by Windmill Software, who bought us such treasures as Digger.

Now this game takes me way back! I remember thinking this was the corniest and geekiest idea for a game ever. The developer probably was sitting at his desk going ‘uh duhhh what should I uhhh.. game.. uhhh what about duhhh oh wow a disk.. oh uhhh ooo sticker says no dust.. ohhh a game.. uhh duhh cool’ . Indeed, a skeptic I was, but I was given this game way back when variety was slim, so I played it, and to my surprise, I thought it was rather funky (even though it was a rather strange concept).

This game is cool! You are a magical (well, not magical as you are square) 5.25″ floppy disk, and your job is to get through each maze-like level avoiding all the things you see on those stickers that come with disks (magnets and dust being apparent in this situation). If you touch magnets
or dust, you shall be ruined like any God-fearing disk would be!

I think the perfect sequels would have been the 3.5″ Floppy Frenzy, followed by the ever-popular CD Frenzy, Zipdisk Frenzy and Removable Hard-drive frenzy. But I guess the demand was low, a real shame really *sniff*.

The graphics were in lovely shades of red, green and gold ? liken to Digger, and other Windmill Software classics. I cannot comment on the sounds, if any you can expect the lovely sounds of your PC speaker.

Overall, Floppy Frenzy *cringe* is a nice simple yet totally fun game. It’s so cool how all these old games top the stakes in game-play, even after all these years. (Boy do I feel old). At 50kb, you can give it a shot.

A nice little side-scrolling platform game. Goody features you as a crazy little burglar guy, who bounds around the place collecting tools for his task to rob the big bank. While you are jumping around though, you have to look out for the policeman, and other various enemies that you’ll encounter. Beware, some of them are rather…. Odd

I had another little play of this game after it was added to the site. I couldn’t remember how hard it was to control him! The controls on this game are quite tricky, you use the a, z (up and down) and the o, p (left and right) keys if I remember right. Sure that isn’t too complicated, lots of games use those keys, but when it comes to jumping ARGH!! I think it hates me! You can only do running jumps, he will not jump up and across! Which can make things really difficult.

The graphics are ok, with their basic orange and green colouring. Monuments of Mars here we come. The pictures are all really cute, and it’s great for a 1987 game:)

This game is great apart from the fact that he just wont do what I instruct him to!

Jetpack was great! I remember this being one of the games I would never delete off my computer. There were hundreds of levels, which meant that you were entertained for a long time. Some of the harder levels made my head hurt =

It’s a really fun little puzzle game, which is easy to get the hang of right away. You are this cool lil’ dude with a jetpack on. Your task is to collect all the emerald gems and then move onto the next level. At first it’s easy as you get used to your jetpack and phase shifter that lets you burn holes through specific walls. Some walls are denser than other walls, and therefore take longer for you to get through. Some walls you cannot go through at all. There are other items to collect, like gold and jetpack fuel. You’re gonna need fuel on the bigger levels, as the jetpack doesn’t come with a bottomless supply unlike McDonald’s coffee.

As the levels increase the difficulty does to (What? You expected something else?), and things such as ice, and ooze are there to add another bit of a challenge. No game is complete without evil homing bots that love to follow you and springs things that want to zap you dead. Once hit you are dead and have to restart the level, which can get annoying, but there are continues galore (bonus!).

The level creator was very cool, and came included with the game. I spent ages making levels for my friends that were really hard, and they did the same for me. You are given all the elements of the game, and can create your own levels to play. “Some teachers bought Jetpack because they considered the editor to be educational, encouraging their students’ creativity” (quoted from www.adeptsoftware.com). It was pretty popular . There are a lot of fan websites out there with levels they have made. You can download and play these for more challenges still.

The sound and the graphics are what is to be expected from that time, standard PC Speaker beeps and pretty colourful squares for graphics. It is a tad outdated now, but if you love old games then you would expect what you got.

Overall, it’s a fun game, enjoyed by all. I’ve seen quite a few Jetpack fanatic sites out there, so it must have some kind of crazy phenomenon thing going. Definitely worth a play, and don’t forget to have a go with the level editor.

Visit the homepage of the developers: www.adeptsoftware.com

P.S. Oh yeah, did I mention the Christmas edition Jetpack? Kickass!

Jumpman is one of those very old classic games that paved the way for your typical platformers. It was designed after Nintendo started with all that Donkey Kong nonsense

This guy called Randy Glover made Jumpman and then went and found Epyx who were kind enough to be the publishers. (This was back in the days when you got really rich really quickly making games). It was originally made for the PC and Atari systems, then its sequel was made shortly after (Jumpan Jr, 1984) and that was available also on C64.

Jumpman is great fun! You run around collecting flowers (stfu! they are so!!) and avoiding bombs that are floating around the screen. They are these horrible evil white dots, and when they see you they make this typical high pitched noise and hurl themselves straight at you across or down the screen and you have to jump and run away. Its heaps of fun, and does require a lot of skill. When Jumpman jumps, he kind of leaps so you have to be sure to not jump too late when near the edge of a platform. You could find yourself way down on the ground, legs sprawled, seeing stars if you do

There are 30 levels in all, meaning great fun that can last for ages. It’s not an easy game, quite a challenge. Scaling ladders, jumping bombs and climbing up ropes. All very fast-paced and full of action.

This game has standard old-timer graphics. So it might hurt your eyes. Back in the old days (*sigh* here she goes again) it used to look really cool with its green platforms and orange flowers, but nowadays you’re gonna have to settle for pink (but that’s why you’re visiting this site for right? Because you love pink!).

The sound can get on your nerves, and is rather loud. He makes this noise when he moves, and when he falls on his head. Like others, I could never figure out how to turn the sound off. But as with the graphics, this is an older game, 19 years old at the date of this review – so expect great gameplay and disturbing graphics and sound

I’d definitely recommend getting a copy of this game. It’s a wonderful old game and brings back heaps of cool memories, and totally kicks butt (Donkey Kong eat yer heart out ~~ Hehe).

This game is also known as “Livingstone Supongo” (in Spanish I guess), but you might know it better as “Livingstone I presume” (English of course!).

In this game you are the journalist called Henry Morton Stanley. He is known as the guy who spent 8 months travelling around and through Africa to find Dr Livingstone. The doctor had been missing for over 3 years, but was found in great health in a small African village. He wasn’t lost at all but had been detained as he had gotten sick and was short of supplies. The famous “Dr Livingstone I presume?” phrase comes from when Stanley found the doctor and didn’t quite know what to say to him.

This game is a lot like the actual task was. You are to journey around in Africa and find Dr Livingstone. (Except I assume you are not an arrogant pompous git like that Stanley guy was Hehe). So you are in this side-scrolling action adventure. Who knows what could happen in the next screen? There are many jungle predators that want to eat you, and you must find the good doctor.

The graphics are great, and the sound is your typical PC speaker.

Overall its got great gameplay, and isn’t as predictable as you would want it to be.

Note: The download includes 2 versions of the original, plus another version which has been patched to run on modern computers with no slow down tool needed. If you prefer to use a slow down tool, you can get one from our utilities page.

Lode Runner, oh what a classic, and you thought I had no taste! This is one of the first games I was ever exposed to (except for those classic C64 games I woffle on about ).

My very first memory of this game being about 7 or 8 years old, sitting in the study at Maree’s house under a blanket with her with my pink pajama’s on. They had just got their brand spanking new ATARI? We used to stay up until like 10pm (boy did we think we were naughty for that!). Then we used to go to bed, and get up at some ungodly hour and get playing again in the mornings. Pfft, and you thought only boys had gaming sleepovers .

Lode Runner a good puzzle-meet-action game. 50 levels packed with action! I guess one reason I really love the game Jumpman was because it reminds me a lot of Lode Runner. This is your traditional climb-the-ladder game as you run around collecting boxes. You dig holes and trap the enemies which are, well, dumb enemies to put it nicely. You also dig holes to get yourself through parts of levels. You have to be careful though, because the holes do fill up, and that will trap your enemy, but it can also trap you. You can manipulate enemies (due to their stupidity to your advantage a lot, and also the holes you dig (get strategic with them ).

Did I mention the funky level editor? Why yes, there is a level editor, and you can create your own custom levels when you’ve conquered the 50 that are included. This is a great addition to the game, making it basically never ending. You can download the level editor as an extra above. Go on, knock yerself out

The graphics were what you would expect for a 1983 game, nothing spectacular, typical CGA. You can make out everything in the screen, which is what is necessary. You can see ladders, enemies, boxes, ground and yourself. What more could you need? I haven’t experience Lode Runner with sound, but expect your typical PC speaker to rock the casbar (or drive you spare).

I totally recommend you have a go at this game. It’s a classic, one of the best in its class. I have many fond memories associated with it, and it’s just a brilliant game.

Ph34r the red! Ah, The Monuments of Mars (plural as this includes all four of the volumes!)

Monuments of Mars – Volume 1 – First Contact

Monuments of Mars – Volume 2 – The Pyramid

Monuments of Mars – Volume 3 – The Fortress

Monuments of Mars – Volume 4 – The Face

Trust good old Apogee to split one game into about 4 again. You wonder if they do that so that you get four times as much game, or so they can make four times as much money. It’s something to think about

But yes, in this game you are a NASA astronaut. You have been sent to the mysterious planet of Mars. There have been many expeditions to Mars, but none have ever returned. Where are our men? Why have they not returned? Are there alien life forms on Mars that may have captured and eaten them? These questions need answering, so they pick YOU! You jump in your space ship, which is cool as its computer powered . You cruise over to Mars and land on the Red Planet. The first thought would have to be ‘wow, what a green and red planet! And what are those funny looking aliens with flowers for antenna, and them strange robots!’

The game graphics aren’t that great for a 1991 game, but its tolerable. I guess things ARE red when you are on Mars . The sound is PC speaker sound, and not that astonishing either. But don’t worry, its not all bad! The game is one that I’ve played right through many times, so it can’t be all that bad right!? I mean I was addicted.

So go, across the planets surface and then deep within the planet. Encounter strange, and yet some pleasant aliens. There are all kinds of exciting things. BUT WAIT! Why yes, yes there is more. You get four times as much of it, because this is an Apogee game, and there are four volumes!

See if you can find the missing astronauts, collect some points, shoot some aliens and find out the secrets of Mars.

Another one of those wee cute arcade games that I love. This is in some ways a side-scrolling platform, but as it scrolls sideways it kind of goes upwards. Dang, I feel dizzy thinking about it. You’ll have to wait and see

In this adventure you are Pogo, the small green dude. Eight towers have been thrust up out of the sea and it’s your job to blow them to bits. You have to get to the top of each tower in order to do this, after which you move onto the next tower.

But on the way up to the top of each tower is where you do the actual game playing. Firstly there is the steps you have to climb. They all over the place and you have to find your way to the top. Then there are enemies to jump over and kill with your snowballs (you must have the coldest hands ever!). There are annoying blocks and bouncing things which you have to shoot or run away from, plus other enemies too which you can only stun or just turn around and leg it.

Just to add a bit more tension to your game is the counter. That’s right, those nasty folks have made a time limit on how long you have to make it to the top of the towers and get that self destruct triggered. Plus you only have three lives so you kind of have to race against time but also be pretty careful.

The graphics are old, but they look pretty good This game has EGA as an option as well as CGA woohoo! This of course makes the enemies a bit easier to see. And you might even be able to tell what they are! The sound is typical PC speaker scary sounds, but as usualy you get used to them

It’s a fun game and takes an original approach to that whole side-scrolling genre. I’m not good with games that make me rush against time, but give it a shot.

I wish that i’d never added this bloody game, because now I have to endure bunny and her NZ cohorts whining about how “that looks nothing like a kiwi” and “the south island looks to big”.

Moan moan moan, that’s all I get.

Anyway, the reason that I DID add it is because New Zealand story is one of the only straight platform games that has managed to hold my attention for a decent length of time. I can’t put my finger on the reason why this is, it must be down to good design but anyway, there is something indescribably fun about the game and it definately has that “just one more go” factor.

Story is never a big thing in this type of game, but for those of you who are interested :

“New Zealand is a peaceful place to live – if you’re a kiwi, particularly in the Auckland zoo – Tiki is as happy as can be.
Trouble turns up in the guise of psychotic walrus who has an enormous appetite for fresh Kiwi and kidnaps Tiki and his relatives to stock the larder.
The walrus hides his captives around the island in 20 hazardous locations and our hero escapes and sets about rescuing his buddies. Watch the feathers fly as Tiki escapes his plan, for the walrus has some very strange companions and their out for blood.”

Graphicaly the game is not impressive at all – functional at best so this is not what draws me to the game. It’s the gampley that keeps me coming back. The game features nice simple level design, interesting enemies (especialy the big boss creatures) and some nice touches such as the ability to fly around the level on a baloon. There are also many weapon power-ups to suppliment the default bow and arrow, these range from bombs to invulnerability pills.

A simple, very very fun game that appeals to the big kid in me.

Recommended

Ah, there is nothing like the feel of cold steel impaling you in rather interesting places to really get you moving. Trust me, this game has its fair share of ‘cringe moments’.

You’ve got three guesses to tell me the name of the evil dude who kidnapped the princess. Grand Vizier Jaffar you say? Well, you’d be exactly right! Aladdin here we come! But no, sorry you are not Aladdin. You are trying to rescue the princess who is your love; you have an hour to get to her. If you don’t get to her in an hour, then she will be forced to marry Jaffar or be killed.

I have to say that does take some skill to play this game. It is quite important that you know how to jump, otherwise you can end up either impaled on spikes or a big pile of broken bones at the bottom of a pit. They have those lovely jumps, where you have to do a flying leap and end up hanging off the edge of the other side * shudder *. There are other scary things too, like some of the floors fall in, whilst others are moving floors. There are guards placed around, and as you move up from the dungeons, the guards get harder to fight. You do nice little sword battles that take a while to get used to, thrust, dodge etc.

Overall, I had some fun playing this game, even if I did always end up with a big spike impaled up my arse. And I kind of couldn’t play it without cheating either * blush *. It’s a classic game, loved by many – give it a shot

This game is a simple plat-former game; you jump from place to place and jump on anything that moves but an added factor to this game is your roar, you have a roar meter that drains when you roar, your roar can be used for scaring other animals (for example scaring a hedgehog type thing so that it turns upside down and you can jump on it )

This game is very colourful and defiantly one that will remind you of younger days . The monkey-puzzles will also make you think the monkeys must be turned around to face the right direction so that when they throw you about, you will land in the right place.

This game also features many action sequences, such as riding an ostrich type thing to timone and pumba bug catching mini-games to a half 3d type chase scene and when you are an adult lion you get to fight other animals (such as hyena’s)..

The lion king is very true to the movie and any fans of the game will enjoy it at lot

Yay, this cartoon was cool, as so is the game. It’s actually the second Tom & Jerry game made the first one being “Tom & Jerry: A Yankee Doodle CAT-astrophe”

Tuffy (Jerry’s nephew) has been kidnapped by Tom, and you have to help Jerry rescue him. You will encounter weird enemies such as wind up teeth etc (hehe, that’s cool). You may just be a mouse, but you are Jerry, and no clicking teeth can stand in your way! You have to go through the house and rescue Tuffy from the paws of that naughty Tom.

This game is your standard side scrolling platform game. Run and jump, dodge the stuff. The graphics are great, and the sound is what you would expect. PC speaker sound.

To tell the truth, I would rather have been Tom, I’ve always wished that Tom could just beat Jerry JUST ONCE! But alas, that’s too much to ask. Maybe Sylvester can get Tweety instead?

This game is amazing to look at. The colours are stunning, and the graphics are awesome. Some may consider it too bright, but I think it looks way cool.

Ok, so you’re wondering what trolls are. You ever see them little plastic dolls, with the colourful hair and no clothes (yes, this is not a n3kkid troll game). I had a collection with different costumes on and stuff. I still have the doctor one and one in pyjama’s on top of my dresser! :O I’m a big baby

This side-scrolling platform game is like most others. You jump on your enemies to kill them, and some of them you better avoid or they will kill you first. Your task is to run around the levels collecting the baby trolls, stomping on enemies and getting through the levels. There are these cool balloons, and when you run into them they pop and you get cool items.

There are many levels, and there are also secret places that you can find. You can play the game again and again just because it’s so darn cute looking. You’re bound to never find all the secrets, but you can try and not get bored . A totally excellent game!

All your CD’s have been stolen and stashed all over Hawaii. It’s your task to go and find them, and get them back! For some unknown reason, stealing your CD’s will assist the badass in taking over the world. Hey, I just played the game; I wouldn’t know the logic behind it!

You can do what dragons to best and breathe fire at the enemies, singing them real nice like. You do this while running around the levels and collecting CD’s. You have to get a certain number of CD’s to progress to the next level. Generally DJ Puff is a lot like most platform games, and you can pretty much predict what to do.

The graphics are okay. You can see the enemies and it’s all pretty and colourful. I found it a little bit lame, but we can’t be expecting too much from the older games. The sound is ok too , I give it a pass.

Okay to start off you should know that I am referring to the games on the ZX Spectrum (128k for the tech-heads). This is because more games came out on the Specky (Spectrum) and its that which the games were originally coded on (they were ported to many other systems including the Amiga and the PC).

Okay, so you may be asking, “so what the hell is Dizzy?” Well, it’s a game that was made on the ZX Spectrum in the 1980′s but finished its reign on the PC and Mega-Drive (Genesis for the Americans). The basic concept of the game is that you are a egg that is called surprisingly enough Dizzy, you are part of a small village that has “the yolk folk” inhabiting it. The Yolk Folk are your family and friends.

The basic plot is unusually the same in these games “Zack the evil wizard has captured Dizzy’s friends and girlfriend, Dizzy is obviously pissed at this and sets off the find his friends to defeat the evil wizard Zack”. You accomplish this task by jumping around many, many screens of pure fun picking up objects and solving tasks.

In all there were 7 PURE Dizzy games (Dizzy, Treasure Island Dizzy, Fantasy Land Dizzy, Magicland Dizzy, Spellbound Dizzy, Prince Of The Yolk Folk and Crystal Kingdom Dizzy. (There was another game called Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy that was released on the Mega-Drive and the PC but I don’t count that as being pure for reasons specified later). Dizzy also formed a few Spin-offs, the obvious ones being Kwik Snax (which was a puzzle game that had a super cool Dizzy rock band in it ), Fast Food Dizzy (PAC-Man Rip-off ), Dizzy Down The Rapids (Action game involving Dizzy in a barrel and apples), Panic Dizzy (another puzzle game) and Bubble Dizzy (in which you had been thrown off a pirate ship into the deep water and have to find you way up to the surface by riding bubbles. Hell a magazine (crash magazine) even made its own version of Dizzy (Dizzy 3 1/2) as the release of Dizzy 4 was getting close.

If you’re still in puzzlement of why the creators (the Oliver Twins), created their whole game around a load off eggs! Then think of it this way; Mario is one of the best selling game series ever and that is about a Italian plumber created by some guys in Japan… go figure?

The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy (Mega-Drive and PC only):
This was the worst Dizzy game by far, it was just a cheap attempt at getting a few extra bucks. This game basically combined elements of all the other dizzy games and like Crystal Kingdom was just a platform game with easy puzzles.

The plot of this game I have to say I have absolutely no idea played it for about 10 mins, realized it was crappy, turned it off and hung my head in shame at the disappointment of this game. I have to admit this was Code-Masters fault and NOT the Oliver Tiwns, as they were the specky people.

Graphics are the best seen on a dizzy game and so is the sound, in my view this game is not really worth the floppy disk it came on.

Music:
Just HAD to put this in, the music is great! The tunes stick in your head for years.

Conclusion:
Defiantly worth getting, even if you’re not a fan of platformers. Gords
statement: ” Whoopee Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Boing Ahh crap I jumped in the water”

Bad things about Dizzy:
Yes there are some bad things about these games :O. Basically the controls are one, as you can sometimes jump too far or to short and you die, you can lose all of your lives on one small part like jumping over a lake. After you have got real far and that happens, you get pissed off quite a bit.

Magicland Dizzy:
Well guess who has gone and captured all the Yolk Folk. Yup that’s right that evil wizard Zack again. Sheesh you think he would of learned that dizzy kicks his arse every time, n what does he want with eggs other than to eat them, I digress.

This is the dizzy that the ever popular walking on clouds was brought into the limelight, but float on them too long and the earth shall soon become closer to Dizzy’s boots (you can now walk on clouds but you sink if you stand still).

In this episode your duties range from persuading a witch to perform magic, to kicking Ogre’s arse’s (literally). The graphics and sound are better in this one I reckon ). Well worth playing, I leave it

Fast food dizzy was another of codemasters attempts at milking the dizzy franchise, and man was this one sooo see through or what! It’s basically a Dizzy version of Pac-Man with cool cut scenes in the middle of every few stages. There’s not any kind of plot to describe as well cos ummm yea dizzy now works in a fast food joint that’s inhabited by ghosts… i guess. anyway the graphics aren’t anything to boast about. its a refreshing change from the dreary pac-man series that never seems to end (how they have made so many games that are exactly the same apart from a bow or something apples and got away with it is a mystery to me).

if you’re into pac-man type games then you will prolly like this, and if you’re just looking for some time to waste for 15 mins while you wait for your TV program to start then this is prolly the game for you

(There was another game called Fantasitic Adventures of Dizzy that was released on the Mega-Drive and the PC but I don’t count that as being pure for reasons specified later).

Prince of the Yolkfolk:
Well this is another game in which people should download if they are not sure, as this one is very user friendly. But I have to say it’s the second easiest of the group (being so easy my 6 year old niece got quite far in it, but then she had to go home as it was tea time. I digress again)

In this game, Daisy has gone missing and the king has left the kingdom again :O something must be wrong. You start off trapped in a house under the ground with a locked door blocking your only way out, your only objects to hand are a pile of leaves, matches and water (Humm whatever shall we do).

Your tasks range from visiting heaven to crossing the river Stinx (the so-called river that you have to cross to get to hell). This game has great graphics and sound and is great fun to spend a while sitting in front of the computer staring at an egg bounce around).

Ah Coolspot. You might remember him off television, the 7-Up mascot. He is the little red dot dude with cool shades, funky attitude and Mickey Mouse gloves to match.I think the only part of this game that I actually found easy was the yo-yo playing part. Then again, that did happen after you left it idling and he got bored (like Commander Keen and his book hehe). The difficulty I had can be blamed on the fact that I’m lame when it comes to some games that require me to move around fast and jump things. Jumping is not my forte.

So anyway, the game is fun. It’s a side-scrolling platform, consisting of many levels, rather interesting enemies, and a whole lot of jumping. You collect clocks for time extensions, as you’re racing against time to get through the levels. You can also collect other stuff for points, and red dots that float and look magical for bonus things. In the top right hand corner is his cool meter, and you have to collect 7-Up to keep him from turning into a totally Uncoolspot.

I can’t really say too much, as I didn’t get very far. I did enjoy the levels I played, and apparently it’s a great game. So download it and have a play. If you also want to write a more insightful review you’re also very welcome

Your typical jump ‘n’ run platform game, based on the characters of the same name. The plot is inconsequential (something about your record collection being stolen) all you need to know is that you take on the role of either Jake or Elwood Blues and um… jump ‘n’ run through various levels, avoiding baddies and collecting stuff as you go.

It’s a tried and tested, and therefore not very original formula.

The best thing about the game (casting my mind back to wehn I owned it on the Atari ST) is the ingame music. If you’ve seen anything from the comedy duo before (sketches, movies) then it will all be very familiar to you, and I have to admit that the choons are damn catchy.

*hums* eeeeeevvvvvverybody, neeeeeeeeds somebody, eeeeeeeeevery bodddy, neeeeeeds somebody to lov…

um.. yeeeeeeah, back to the review…

(btw, the music of the PC version just cannot compare to that of the ST or Amiga games, download the MOD music provided above and you’ll see).

The graphics are average, nicely drawn sprites and recognisable backdrops – useable but nothing out of the ordinary. The game is fun for the first few levels but like most games of this type it gets repetitive and somewhat boring quite fast. It’s a good game if you just want a quick blast, but don’t expect to want to stay up all night playing it.

Fun, but nothing special.

As a lifetime fan of Jumpman, Lode Runner and Jetpack, I just had to add this game to the site!

Welcome to the life of a clown, your task is to gather up all the hats on each level! After which you shall proceed to the next level. But as this is a clown game, the levels are known as ‘rings’. Clowns perform in rings not levels!

But.. before you think that’s all to it, there are indeed obstacles in your way. I’ve figured that you have to be quite strategic if you want to collect up all the hats. The evil clowns that are out to get you can be quite clever. You also really have to get the knack of jumping from platform to platform, as that can be quite tricky. As you progress up through the rings the game gets harder, the clowns get more evil, and your l33t jumping skillz need to improve.

Big Top sets itself apart from Jumpman by having each ring span onto two or more screens. I thought this was rather nifty myself .

With sparkly CGA colours, and the PC speaker blatting out the sounds this game is all fun. The sounds aren’t too annoying, and the graphics are actually quite good considering the game is 20 years old at the time of this review.

Also, Big Top can be played with a joystick, if you think you can handle it!

Baby Jo! Awww cutie

Just by looking at the screenshots you can see this game is damn cute. It has the white fluffy cloud screen, with the bottle (a.k.a health), diapers, hearts and the face of Baby Jo.

This is your basic platform game. You go from left to right, avoiding and killing the enemies. When you get to the end, you’ve completed the level. Its not that hard to figure out It’s got a lot of charm, but nothing unusual. Flowers try shoving stuff up your arse, wood rolls around, and bees and other flying things try to smash you in the face. Did someone mention a lawnmower?

I’ve never played this game with any sound, but I did some inquiring into the game to find out more about the sound, to discover that it actually doesn’t have any sound. That’s a bit of a let down, but its still a great game nonetheless. If they ever remade this, could you imagine the kind of sounds it would have?

The graphics are actually really good, and that adds to the whole appeal of the game. If you’ve played about a billion other side-scrolling games such as this, you might not find anything new or exiting here. But the theme behind it is totally original

Thumbs up!
