The first thing I noticed about this game is the totally funky music. To put a very personal slant on this, I didn’t like the game at all, but I did like the music, and I did like the lovely background and imagery at the top of the screen.

Press spacebar to select a difficulty of Regular, Unleaded or Premium. Ha-ha. Nice touch! Great cartoons between the levels. Shame there is only eight levels though.
Good adlib sound, nice VGA graphics, but pretty lame game-play. If I really knew how to play it then I’d probably be okay. Otherwise I just… don’t know what to say.

Oh I have been having so much fun playing this game for the last three or so days. It is a completely addictive, hardass piece of addictive and frustrating goodness! >_<

Ugh!

The aim? Simple, fight your way through 30 levels of mysterious mazes while being bombarded by little red men, skeletons, big red teddy bears (erm, iruno) and then multitudes of dragons. And then funny big dragons which look like vampires, so end up looking like some sort of emo-dragon-vampire. But you can’t be assured it’s going to cut itself, so just shoot the crap out of it.

You can shoot with nukes or bombs. You gather those while running around, they look like little scroll things. Also potions – remember you can use the spacebar for that as well as “P”. There are shortcut keys all over. Also doors will need unlocking so collect keys.

One thing I remembered – to my amazement – is the secrets. If you shoot certain parts of the catacomb walls you will reveal passage ways to lovely prizes, or portals to higher levels (heeey, saves time!). I guess I used to play this game way too much when I was younger.

I’m kind of gutted that if you die you have to start again. I’ve not managed to make it past the 18th level in my latest attempt (and did I mention I’ve been playing for three days?!). Don’t worry, I’ll get there soon…

Oh, hint: Great sounding game, POW POW POW oldschool.

No one knows ‘ow long they have been ‘ere; even old Albert don’t recall ‘em comin’an”e reckons ‘e might he over ‘undredt. We didn’t mind when they kept themselves to themselves. I mean all we wants is a bit o’piece an’ quiet an’ leave to go about our business. We’re simlple folk ‘ere in Little Dullford and we can’t be don’ with magic an’ spells. I never did ‘old with folk meddlin’ in things best left alone. We’d see ‘em o’course; in the forest pickin’ toadstools an’ suchlike, or p’raps one would pop into Tubby Hieke’s shop for ‘erbs an’ stuff, but by an’ large they left us normal folk alone, and that’s ‘ow we like it.

They’d ‘ad arguments before, we all know that. Well, readin’ them magic books all day they can’t be right in the ‘ead can they? Anyway, two summers back, or maybe three (I remember because that was the year Albert’s donkey died), old Leanoric (he’s the older one I think), he turned ‘is brother Learic into a frog! His own brother! but he turned ‘im back after a week an’ at least they didn’t bother us. Two weeks back, all this changed; first the forest went quiet for a few days, not even a sparra’ dared to make a sound. Then the noises began, first shoutin’ then all manner o’ bangs, explosions and things best not thought about. Yesterday, old Leanoric upped an’ left an’ moved to another ‘ut on t’uther side o’village. Hieke (who knows’em better’n most), reckons they’s about to start a feudin’ an’ woe betide the poor soul who gets in their way. That as maybe but there’s strange things afoot in this ‘ere village an’ no mistake. lt don’t take no fancy book learnin’ to figger we ‘ain’t seen the last o’ this, you mark my words.”

In Feud you take on the role of one of two brothers – wizards – who are um.. feuding. You must travel the land collectin ingredients in order to create nasty spells to use against your sibling (who is doing the same). This game was the spectrum equivalent of the one-on-one deatmatch (against the computer) except that this is more fun.*

It’s a very simple concept that works well – though it is not without it’s problems. For instance each game can go on for a very long time, finding ingredients is a lengthy business when the game world is as big as it is in Feud. Also some spells can only be used once, meaning that you have to go to the trouble of collecting the ingredients all over again (very annoying). It would be much better IMO if once you have a spell, you keep it for the duration.

The graphics are very nice for the time the game was released (some of the best seen in the spectrum as far as I know) and the game world itself is quite interesting, if a little on the big side (it’s very easy to get lost).

All in all a fun game, flawed in a few places but still a nice way to waste an hour or so.

* Look, I don’t care what anyone says – Quake sucks arse. Bite me!

Wowee. It’s an isometric game in all its 1980′s glory. Looking awful like so many Ultimate games like Alien8, you’d be forgiven for thinking your PC has turned into a Spectrum.

It’s easy to install and get running, but it rips along and you’d better use a slowdown utility or the game will be over before you’ve figured out the controls. Indeed it’s unplayable even on an old 486.

Well it’s quite a good game. You have to assemble all the parts of your escape kit, beit disguises, wirecutters or whatever. There’s a regular routine at the camp like roll call and meals and you must be present whenever the prisoners are checked, so you have to be sneaky to get anything done. Once you have everything you need for your
escape, it’s time to go!

Well the graphics suck, but in a retro way, so that makes them alright. The sound is internal speaker only (yike). And it has a tendency to crash the sound routines on exit so your speaker will burble away until a reboot. But on the whole it’s quite an enjoyable game although you probably won’t play it more than once.

This is a great game, which bears some resemblance to classic Space Invaders, but with a twist…

You are standing on blocks, and you have to stomp the blocks and crush the bugs before the bugs climb up. As you progress up through the levels, the bugs get faster and harder to kill. So in some ways it is the same as Space Invaders, but only in the sense that things are coming for you in droves, and you have to kill them first.

The graphics in Jump are very good, the colours are amazing. Quite like those of Commander Keen 4 and other games of that era, great for 1992.

This would be a great game to try, addictive gameplay mixed with great graphics. It’s a must have for your old games collection. Jump really goes to show what high calibre games can be made from a very simple idea.

Jumpman is one of those very old classic games that paved the way for your typical platformers. It was designed after Nintendo started with all that Donkey Kong nonsense

This guy called Randy Glover made Jumpman and then went and found Epyx who were kind enough to be the publishers. (This was back in the days when you got really rich really quickly making games). It was originally made for the PC and Atari systems, then its sequel was made shortly after (Jumpan Jr, 1984) and that was available also on C64.

Jumpman is great fun! You run around collecting flowers (stfu! they are so!!) and avoiding bombs that are floating around the screen. They are these horrible evil white dots, and when they see you they make this typical high pitched noise and hurl themselves straight at you across or down the screen and you have to jump and run away. Its heaps of fun, and does require a lot of skill. When Jumpman jumps, he kind of leaps so you have to be sure to not jump too late when near the edge of a platform. You could find yourself way down on the ground, legs sprawled, seeing stars if you do

There are 30 levels in all, meaning great fun that can last for ages. It’s not an easy game, quite a challenge. Scaling ladders, jumping bombs and climbing up ropes. All very fast-paced and full of action.

This game has standard old-timer graphics. So it might hurt your eyes. Back in the old days (*sigh* here she goes again) it used to look really cool with its green platforms and orange flowers, but nowadays you’re gonna have to settle for pink (but that’s why you’re visiting this site for right? Because you love pink!).

The sound can get on your nerves, and is rather loud. He makes this noise when he moves, and when he falls on his head. Like others, I could never figure out how to turn the sound off. But as with the graphics, this is an older game, 19 years old at the date of this review – so expect great gameplay and disturbing graphics and sound

I’d definitely recommend getting a copy of this game. It’s a wonderful old game and brings back heaps of cool memories, and totally kicks butt (Donkey Kong eat yer heart out ~~ Hehe).

Ninjas rock! You know it’s true!

The Last Ninja however sucks large amounts of buttock. Surely his elite martial arts training extended to “how not to die when coming within 3 feet of water” or “how not to miss a jump just because you were one micron off”.

Arsehead!

Anyway, your clan (ninja clan? who knows) has been brutaly murdered and it’s up to you to avenge them.. yadda yadda yadda. The game is an action/adventure hybrid that takes place from an isometric viewpoint across a faux-japanese landscape (the effect works well actualy). You must jump (waaaaay too much emphasis on this) fight and solve puzzles in order to reap bloody vengence on your enemies. Speaking of which, one area that Last Ninja does excel in is weaponry. Along with regular punching and kicking you can get access to a sword, nunchakas, a staff, smoke bombs, throwing stars.. and all those other thingies that make life groovy HOWEVER, it’s a bit of a let down that the control system is so dire, meaning that actualy using your weapon is a lot harder than it has to be.
To be honest I remember the game being a lot more enjoyable on 8-bit systems (the C64 and ZX Spectrum).. maybe i’m just getting old Nevertheless, once you get used to the controls and the pixel-perfect precision that the game requires you may enjoy it.

Llamatron? Llama’s? You’re probably thinking “what next huh?” Even the name of this game is enough to make you giggle and really want to play it. Llamatron: 2112 is a whole heap of fun that will no doubt make you giggle more than once.

This old classic was brought you to by a llama-lover from way back – Jeff Minter. He was quite popular for the part he played in the development of C64 titles, and of course for his love of llamas and yaks which he has shown in the games produced by Llamasoft, his own software development company. If you have ever heard of the game “Attack of the Mutant Camels” then you have Jeff Minter to thank for that little beauty too!

Basically, you are a llama. Don’t take that the wrong way! In the game you are a llama, and your job is to rescue the other llamas. You llama around shooting everything that gets in the way. The game is pretty much predictable in that sense. I think the main selling point of the game is the humorous aspect, not the gameplay.

The graphics are standard CGA pink, purple and blue. The fonts are hard to read, and the actual enemies and your own llama look a bit, shoddy. :\ The graphics aren’t all that great, and it is a shame that the game is 1992, and is still such poor quality.

Give the game a shot, as it’s still a barrel of laughs. Even if the graphics do try to ruin it, and the gameplay is kind of lacking, you’ll still find it a real hoot.

Ah, there is nothing like the feel of cold steel impaling you in rather interesting places to really get you moving. Trust me, this game has its fair share of ‘cringe moments’.

You’ve got three guesses to tell me the name of the evil dude who kidnapped the princess. Grand Vizier Jaffar you say? Well, you’d be exactly right! Aladdin here we come! But no, sorry you are not Aladdin. You are trying to rescue the princess who is your love; you have an hour to get to her. If you don’t get to her in an hour, then she will be forced to marry Jaffar or be killed.

I have to say that does take some skill to play this game. It is quite important that you know how to jump, otherwise you can end up either impaled on spikes or a big pile of broken bones at the bottom of a pit. They have those lovely jumps, where you have to do a flying leap and end up hanging off the edge of the other side * shudder *. There are other scary things too, like some of the floors fall in, whilst others are moving floors. There are guards placed around, and as you move up from the dungeons, the guards get harder to fight. You do nice little sword battles that take a while to get used to, thrust, dodge etc.

Overall, I had some fun playing this game, even if I did always end up with a big spike impaled up my arse. And I kind of couldn’t play it without cheating either * blush *. It’s a classic game, loved by many – give it a shot

This game got a bit of a bad rap when it was released and I can’t exactly remember why but I will say that this is my favourite of the series, in fact I thought it was bloody damn good despite how frustrating it can get. PoP2 is a big improvement over the original, no more dull grey monotone walls and dungeon, the Prince actually travels this time around, to various exotic locals (see screenshots) and no longer restricted to the same dungeon and tileset lol

PoP2 is propelled by a compelling story, told through beautifully hand drawn narrated cutscenes that were ahead of their time, a bonus treat is voice dialogue in the cutscenes even for a floppy game. The production value is quite amazing for a PC game of its time, check out the screenshots you’ll like Gameplay-wise the Prince has gotten some motor skills, he can now crawl through tunnels and avoid traps, thrust downwards at snakes but mostly he is the same Prince from PoP1 with a multicoloured wardrobe. The most welcome change is the addition of new traps and quite a few new ways to die. When Bunnzy plays she can now get spikes up her arse as well as in the back, in the stomach front on, get chopped in half, snake bitten, and lose her head to pebble gun traps. New enemies too, you wont be fighting anonymous sultan cronies exclusively, there are now skeletons, eaglemen, those damn flying heads and others. The puzzle aspect is a bit more realistic as the levels and switch placements are placed like how you could potentially expect the old dungeon/castle to be like so the old ‘find the switch that opens the door’ syndrome is not so readily apparent. The different locations and also different events (I won’t spoil anything) are quite indicative of the effort the designers put in to try and deviate from the usual gameplay whenever possible.

This game does not get top rating however due to some ridiculously frustrating aspects that could have been easily avoided. 1) they save game feature is a WELCOME addition to the series, but they should have made it so that you can save at any point, not just the start of the level. The level design is still really linear which means there really still is only one way to beat each level though there might be dfifferent paths in getting to certain locations you’re still going to be reloading and trialing and erroring until you find what the designer intended, and you do this again and again starting from practically the beginning each time. If the story wasn’t as compelling I would have given up pretty early, I ended up giving up about half way through the game anyway as it got way too frustrating (think Groundhog Day), its a pity that the frustration is bad enough to overwhelm the game’s natural addictive platform puzzle solving charm.

2) Those DAMN flying heads. This has got to be some of the worse monster design I’ve seen in any game, where you a common enemy that only has a certain moment it can be hurt and is basically invincible at any other time, its quite easy to find yourself getting hit by these things over and over again with nothing you can do except die, and I’m talking about just facing one, there are times where you have to face multiple flying heads and the combat system doesnt exactly lend itself to quick reaction twitch, counter-twitch and multi directional fighting, another factor in making me quit early. Its bad enough that I have no choice but to go through Groundhog’s Day to get through the levels but after having executed perfectly only to die to a flying head/s just makes me want to kick the screen in.

Thank Jordan Mechner for the cheats lol there is a really good story here, methinks good enough for a screenplay but as a result of design flaws, a lot of people probably won’t make it through far enough to see much of it. It’s worse than a pity, its a tragedy.

This game is a little beauty! Totally cute, addictive and the gameplay is amazing. Its like Lemmings meets Bubble Bobble meets slug-climbs-around-everywhere. People may say that I am easily amused, but this game is a gem

You are Steg the Slug. Yeah, you heard me right, a slug. Your task is to capture your kiddie slugs in bubbles and then they float up to the top of the screen. This may sound easy but there are many things to take into consideration. For starters Steg is merely a slug, and he has to climb over to the baby slug, then blow a bubble, make sure its in the right place, then release the bubble on the baby and have the baby float up. Sounds easy? Well, what if the bubble got caught under something? Then Steg has to go and nudge it out from underneath.

There are other factors to keep you on your toes as well. Steg has to capture so many of the baby slugs per leel, and he also has to capture them before they turn into tombstones.

The theme of this game is the political-judicial situation in Italy in the first years of ’90. Italian magistrates begin arresting politicians for “Tangentopoli” (Bribesville), corruption scandals multiply and “Mani Pulite” (“clean hands”) investigations spread throughout the political system. A magistrate alone (Antonio Di Piero) leads the investigations in spite of numerous attempts to stop him.

In the game you play the part of the magistrate (“De Petris”) who struggles against corruption’s takeover. There are two kind of stages that cycles growing in difficulty until you lose.

In the first stage you must avoid the Tangentometro (Bribemeter) to show full until year 1992. Agents of corruption will be political minions (the ones carring party shields), party symbols (the flag on the left and the ivy on the right), and political leaders in the background. While shooting them (using “s” and “d” keys) the’ll shoot back at you, helped by corrupted men of law throwing burocratic hindrances from the windows. In the second stage you are in “Ufficio Insabbiature” (“Hindering Office”) to uncover from the sand hindered documents avoiding pitfalls.

The game has been quite an underdog in Italy, not being a state of the art game for the time (1993). I played it on a 286 machine and the character acted too slow too win, then on a Pentium and it acted too fast to consider the game a challenge. Anyway it’s worth at least a play to feel that sense of fighting against useless bureaucracy Italians know well.

Yay, this cartoon was cool, as so is the game. It’s actually the second Tom & Jerry game made the first one being “Tom & Jerry: A Yankee Doodle CAT-astrophe”

Tuffy (Jerry’s nephew) has been kidnapped by Tom, and you have to help Jerry rescue him. You will encounter weird enemies such as wind up teeth etc (hehe, that’s cool). You may just be a mouse, but you are Jerry, and no clicking teeth can stand in your way! You have to go through the house and rescue Tuffy from the paws of that naughty Tom.

This game is your standard side scrolling platform game. Run and jump, dodge the stuff. The graphics are great, and the sound is what you would expect. PC speaker sound.

To tell the truth, I would rather have been Tom, I’ve always wished that Tom could just beat Jerry JUST ONCE! But alas, that’s too much to ask. Maybe Sylvester can get Tweety instead?

This is another one of the first games I ever played. I remember when our school had this game on the old XT machines, and it was basically the only game they had =

You are a little digger, and you dig tunnels collecting gems. Then get as much gold as you can You can be strategic and kill the evil guys with gold bags, by dropping them on their heads. I do believe you can shoot stuff as well, but its much cooler to kill them with the gold, because you can only fire so often anyway.

I can’t really say that much about the game, except that it created a worldwide Digger phenomenon. People loved it; it is a classic indeed! Those dim orange, gold, red and green colours, the beeping and classy sounds!

There is a home page for digger at www.digger.org. Go visit and check out the remastered version. You might want to also join the Digger mailing list if you love the game lots!

A whole new dimension to the world of car racing! This game is great to release all that pent-up stress It was the first game that bought together big giant guns, and a new way to win a car race.

I remember playing this game on my 286. That damn Melissa cow would always get ahead of me in her crappy red car ROAR. Then I would get my biggest missile out and blow her clean out of existence! WOOHOO! Take that! Hehe, I loved this game so much. I never really was one for car games, but Deathtrack is just so much fun!

When you first start you can chose between three different cars, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Some are faster, yet some have heavier armor and can kick harder ass. All are rather funky and threatening though. You then can take your car to the shop and buy weapons or parts. There are some serious weapons, such as missiles, caltrops, mines, machine guns and terminators etc. In the parts shop you can get faster engines, wheels, armor etc.

There are 10 different tracks, in 10 cities. Some of them are at night, some during the day. I liked the variety, as there were enough different tracks, but also not too many, which allowed you to learn them rather well. The more you win, the more money you get. The more money you get, you can buy weapons and car modifications. You NEED to buy weapons, so that you can blast the other drivers off the track, and also defend yourself. Because the less drivers alive on the track, the less people that can fire a missile at you.

When you play this game you will definitely need a slow down app, this game runs way too fast on anything higher then a 286. (You don’t want to try playing this on a p3, mark my words hehe).

I grew up on platform games. Large portions of my childhood were spent getting to a certain place, edging to the last pixel of a platform (falling of the end frequently), jumping, missing my target and either falling to my death of having to play through half a level to get back to where I was. Repeat this process at least 20 times until you finaly make the jump, only to crew up on the next one.

Is it any wonder that I have grown up with “issues”?

Anyway, Dark Castle is a platform game, and rather a good one at that. Fight, um.. jump and solve puzzles in your quest to defeat the evil Black Knight. The game has quite an interesting 360 degree aimaing system, so that when you want to through a rock you rotate your arm until you get the angle that you want. It take a while to get used to but it adds a little bit to the fun of the game.

From the box cover :

“So real it’s frightening. Taking complete advantage of your computer’s sound and visual capabilities… “

Well.. when compared with the MAC version the graphics are superior (they’re in colour for a start ) but the sound in the game is of an extremely poor quality. The MAC version used 8bit sounds, the PC veriosn uses 1bit sounds – you do the math.

Not a particularly outstanding game, but fun nonetheless.

Well here is another underrated classic as far as I can tell me and my brothers were the only people to play this game ever .

But anyway on with the review, this game has a unique style of gameplay, you are one of the Bonanza Brothers and your job is to steal from the corrupt people in the city.. You have to enter a variety of institutions ranging from a casino to a pyramid and steal everything of value fun. Its not just the objective that sets this game apart either, in this game you spend 90% of your time attempting to fool the computer AI (the security guards) so you can sneak past un-noticed or by stunning the guards by shooting them with your rather attractive stun gun. You can accomplish this in many ways, from hiding round corners, to sneaking past when they are asleep to pretending to be a robot, just make sure you get that loot .

The graphics in this game are very well done, everyone is made up out of shapes, and no one has legs or necks giving the game a distinct style. The music is also well done and the sound fits the game well, although usually just consist of cartoon type sounds.

Where this game really shines is in the two-player mode so make sure to get a friend round or play on the interweb using gens to get the most out of it .

If I have one complaint about this game, it’s the size. Its quite easy to complete once you know what your doing and there are only about 6 or 7 levels. Still worth every byte though

Baby Jo! Awww cutie

Just by looking at the screenshots you can see this game is damn cute. It has the white fluffy cloud screen, with the bottle (a.k.a health), diapers, hearts and the face of Baby Jo.

This is your basic platform game. You go from left to right, avoiding and killing the enemies. When you get to the end, you’ve completed the level. Its not that hard to figure out It’s got a lot of charm, but nothing unusual. Flowers try shoving stuff up your arse, wood rolls around, and bees and other flying things try to smash you in the face. Did someone mention a lawnmower?

I’ve never played this game with any sound, but I did some inquiring into the game to find out more about the sound, to discover that it actually doesn’t have any sound. That’s a bit of a let down, but its still a great game nonetheless. If they ever remade this, could you imagine the kind of sounds it would have?

The graphics are actually really good, and that adds to the whole appeal of the game. If you’ve played about a billion other side-scrolling games such as this, you might not find anything new or exiting here. But the theme behind it is totally original

Thumbs up!

Yay! This was one of the greatest movies ever! I totally loved it to bits, even went to see it God knows how many times at the movies (not as many times as The Lion King though hehe). I of course loved this game, as I loved the movie.

You start off in the city of Agrabah, which is where the palace is and everything else you’d be used to if you watched the movie. Face it, it’s basically the only city in the Aladdin universe. You go for carpet rides, and fight with Jafar. Running around collecting things and stomping on people’s heads is the main strategy for this game. I guess its useful then that the main way that Aladdin defeats enemies is by throwing apples or jumping on their heads =D. The apples are collected all over the levels inside boxes etc.

Firstly the graphics were neato! I could have been expecting something really crap, but compared to the other games I had installed at the time, this game was a real stunner. There was a lot of detail, with the backgrounds and people animations. The characters in the game actually did resemble the ones out of the movies, and that is always a bonus.

The sounds for the game are standard sound effects, and the music etc from the movie. This is cool coupled up with the sweet graphics and excellent game play. I liked it right off

Many people say that this game is far too easy and there are just not enough levels. Funnily enough, I found this game just about right for my side-scrolling skillz level, so it was a lot of fun. If you’re a fan of the movie, you’re just going to love this game.

First you are imprisoned for a crime you didn’t commit, then experimented on illegally, and if that wasn’t bad enough, the experiments go wrong and you are trapped with a load of mutants (some days just suck arse don’t they?)

So you grab a weapon and head for the control room which just happens to be on the deepest – and therefore most dangerous level (told ya!)

This game was very much ahead of its time. Not only does it have great graphics and a wonderful “dark” atmosphere, but also a great mouse/keyboard control system. The enemies in the game are varied, ranging from simple machines to mutants reminiscent of H.R gigers Alien, fortunately for you there are many weapons and power ups to help in the disposition of these horrors.

A great game. Fun and addictive and a good way to lose a few hours.
